Lieutenant JG Daniel Kaffee (Cruise), son of a former Attorney General of the United States and Navy Judge Advocate General, is an newbie U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General’s Corps lawyer who conducts the defense in the court-martial of 2 Marines, Private 1st class Louden Downey and Lance Corporal Harold Dawson, who are impeached of mutilating a fellow Marine of their unit, PFC William Santiago, at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Republic of Cuba.
Santiago equated unfavorably to his fellow Marines, had bad relationship with them and failed to honor the chain of command. He went above his masters to deal for a transfer in exchange for blowing the whistle on Dawson for burning a chance for illegal shot towards the Cuban side of the island.
